The Play:

Following seven West End seasons, a record-breaking UK and Ireland tour, and productions across the globe, 2:22: A Ghost Story has become one of the most successful new plays of recent years. Written by Danny Robins, creator of the hit BBC podcasts Uncanny and The Battersea Poltergeist, this award-winning supernatural thriller combines sharp humour, gripping suspense and genuine scares to create an unforgettable night at the theatre. When Jenny becomes convinced that her new home is haunted, her husband Sam dismisses her fears as imagination. During a dinner party with old friend Lauren and her new boyfriend Ben, a heated debate begins. Can the dead really communicate with the living, or is there always a logical explanation? As the evening unfolds, relationships are tested, secrets are uncovered, and an increasingly terrifying presence seems to draw closer. Belief and scepticism collide as the clock ticks towards 2:22am, the mysterious time when Jenny hears something in the house every night. What begins as a friendly discussion soon becomes a chilling search for the truth. Full of twists, tension and unexpected shocks, 2:22: A Ghost Story asks one simple question: Do you believe in ghosts?

The Auditions

Please arrive to start at 10am on Sunday 29th November. Auditionees will initially be seen in random groups of four, and we may ask people to work with different groups throughout the morning. While we will, of course, be looking for strong individual performances, 2:22: A Ghost Story is a play built on relationships. The connections between the characters are at the heart of the story, so it is important for us to see how performers interact with one another and whether those relationships feel believable and genuine on stage. We are looking for actors who can not only bring their character to life but also create the chemistry, tension and authenticity that make this play so compelling.

We are looking to cast the four principal roles with performers who can convincingly play characters in their mid-twenties to late thirties. While exact age is not important, the ability to portray characters within this age range is essential to the relationships, dynamics and themes of the play.

Characters

Sam

Sam is a warm, dependable and likable character who serves as the emotional heartbeat of the play. Practical and level-headed, he approaches life with logic and common sense, he is a true sceptic [non believer] often acting as a calming presence amongst the tensions and supernatural speculation that unfold throughout the play. With an easy charm, and high wit Sam is intelligent relatable and likeable, but he is also fiercely protective of those he cares about. As events become increasingly unsettling, he finds himself caught between reason and the unexplained, requiring an actor who can balance humour, vulnerability and genuine emotional depth.

Jenny

Jenny is a strong, intelligent and fiercely independent woman determined to create the perfect home for her young family. Having recently become a mother, she is navigating the challenges of parenthood whilst trying to hold everything together. Beneath her confident and capable exterior lies a woman wrestling with self-doubt, exhaustion and uncertainty about whether she is getting motherhood right. Practical and sceptical by nature, Jenny refuses to believe in ghosts or the supernatural, relying instead on logic and reason. However, as strange events begin to unfold around her, she finds herself increasingly vulnerable and questioning not only the unexplained happenings in the house, but also her own judgement. religious upbringing and perceptions. The role requires an actor who can balance strength with vulnerability, portraying a woman who is both resilient and fragile, outspoken and deeply human. Jenny’s journey is at the heart of the play, demanding emotional honesty and the ability to convey the pressures of new motherhood alongside growing fear and uncertainty.

Lauren

An American living in London, Lauren is Sam’s former university friend and one of Jenny’s closest confidantes. Sharp, witty and fiercely independent, she brings humour and warmth to even the most unsettling situations. Her long history with Sam hints at unresolved feelings and lingering chemistry, creating tension beneath the surface. Lauren is sceptical, outspoken and often the first to challenge the growing fear around her, but as events unfold she must confront truths she cannot easily explain. The role requires strong naturalistic acting, excellent comic timing, and the ability to balance humour, vulnerability and emotional depth.

Ben

Ben is Lauren’s new boyfriend and, at first glance, couldn’t be more different from Sam. A confident, working-class “lad” with a sharp sense of humour and a no-nonsense outlook on life, he often clashes with Sam’s more polished, intellectual approach. However, beneath Ben’s easy-going exterior lies a man shaped by a deeply personal experience with the supernatural. While he doesn’t actively seek attention for it, his past gives him an openness to possibilities that others struggle to accept. Protective, loyal and surprisingly perceptive, Ben finds himself caught between scepticism and belief as events unfold. The role requires strong comic timing, natural charisma, and the ability to balance banter, vulnerability and emotional intensity.
