PLAY – Falling More Slowly

A one-act drama (running time 55mins approx) exploring the issue of bi-polar disorder (commonly known as manic depression)
Based on real-life testimonies by sufferers of this condition and their close friends and relatives the play follows the journey of a wife and mother living an apparently normal existence but whose life and relationships are blighted and eventually ruined by this often misunderstood illness.
CAST
There are 2 central female characters and an ensemble of 3-4 actors playing a range of roles from children to work colleagues and party-goers etc,
CENTRAL CHARACTERS
Dee – a wife and mother struggling to cope with bi-polar disorder.
Emm – Dee’s mother – a character in her own right but also a narrator figure
Both of these roles are demanding and challenging roles requiring a wide range of emotional communication delivered in a totally naturalistic style.
ENSEMBLE ROLES
Any age – preferably 2 male and 2 female. Onstage throughout, these roles require the ability to switch instantly from one character to another without the assistance of props or costumes.
Production style –
The set consists of one table and 2 chairs. There is one prop – a diary. Everything else that needs to be communicated to the audience will be done by the actors. This will require skills in mime and physical theatre on top of the ability to produce naturalistic performances in a non-naturalistic setting,
Audition
No preparation is required for the audition – scripts will be provided for those auditioning for the central roles.
Due to the stylised performance style there are no restrictions of age when it comes to casting. There is no issue with a 16 year old playing a grandmother. All that is required is a willingness to take risks and to totally invest in a dramatic role (or roles) without the usual assistance of costume and props.
If you’re up for a challenge and can commit to getting off script well before the dress rehearsal then it would be great to see you at audition on the 26th.
