Discovered in a buried in a car park in Leicester (next to a pile of bones that didn’t look that important), an ancient manuscript has proved to be the long-lost first play written by none other than seventeen-year-old William Shakespeare from Stratford-upon-Avon.
William Shakespeare’s Long Lost First Play (abridged) is the literary holy grail: an actual manuscript in Shakespeare’s own hand showing all his most famous characters and familiar speeches in a brand-new story. But because it contained one thousand, six hundred and thirty-nine characters, would take over one hundred hours to perform and contained multiple unwieldy storylines, the Reduced Shakespeare Company (the RSC) decided, as a public service, to cut it to a brief and palatable ninety minutes for performance of this lost masterpiece.
This comedy created by the ‘Bad Boys of Abridgment” (as the RSC likes to be known) in 2016 was written to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death and continues their style of high energy, fast paced productions that have been performed across the globe to great success.
The RSC themselves have rated this play as PG-13: Pretty Good if You’re Thirteen (gives you some kind of idea of what to expect – this play does involve a water pistol fight)
It will be performed in the Studio in a ‘thrust’ setting (audience on 3 sides) and the main quality I will be looking for from the actors will be the ability to interact with the audience. This interaction between the actors and the audience is crucial to the success of this play.
After much deliberation I’ve decided the cast of 3 will be open to anyone between the ages of early 20’s to late 90’s of any gender. I will only decide after auditioning everyone whether to cast it with 3 men, women or as a mixed cast.
